The Stumps

Today I was cutting brioche buns for hamburgers.

The brioche in question was shaped like a muffin, and to make a suitable hamburger bun, the bottom “stump” had to be sliced off.
This scene in my kitchen reminded me of the Seinfeld episode “The Muffin Tops,” in which Elaine starts a business offering only the tops of muffins, the best part, and tries to find someone willing to take the muffin stumps.

But nobody wants the stumps.

The absurdist plot has an undercurrent of wisdom though: There’s no such thing as 100% upside.

At some point you’re going to have to deal with the undesirable parts of life.

If you’re lucky, though, the stumps will be served right alongside the best part.
