Habit Forming

Small, consistent actions are more powerful than big, infrequent actions.

I used to put off writing until Saturday. Every week, I told myself that the writing would happen on Saturday. I was lulled into believing it, too, by the allure of a day with no prior commitments, of hours stretching into the weekend without responsibility. I fooled myself into believing that this great expanse of time was where all my creative action lived.

But you know that’s not the case.

So many other things in life have a claim on your weekends.

Then I wised up. I started writing everyday. Just 400 words a day to start, then a few more.

I accomplished more through small, consistent actions because those actions became a habit.

I performed that habit even when I didn’t want to, on nights I was so tired from work that the idea of writing felt like torture.

That’s the power of forming a habit.

The question goes from “when will I find the time” to “what new habit do I want to create next.”
